1. EYE MAKEUP REMOVER
Invest in a specialist eye makeup remover for this sensitive area where product is harder to shift. Oil formulas are great for waterproof mascara, but be sure to remove excess oils afterwards. Tender eyes and contact lens-wearers should go for water-based removers.
An alternative step in your routine, precleansers are great for cutting through oils, makeup and sunscreens to make the cleansing that follows much more efficient. Professional Makeup artists love this double-cleanse technique as it creates spotless skin as a base.
Cream cleansers are massaged into the skin then removed with a hot cloth, while cleansing milks are applied with a cotton pad. Both methods are great for drier skin types. Water-based cleansers such as micellar water soaked into a cotton pad are quick to use, but often not as effective at cleansing deep into the pores. Foaming cleansers lather up with water and are great for oilier skins, but they can be dehydrating, so remember to follow with a good moisturizer.
A weekly essential to slough off dead cells, get the skin vibrant and improve penetration. Choose mechanical exfoliation via small beads or grains, or chemical exfoliation via alpha or beta hydroxy acids. These are not as scary as they sound and many come from natural sources such as fruits. This is a must-have in your skin care routine steps.
Don‘t skip this step. Toners can clear excess oil, but they also hydrate and create a clear base for serum and moisturizer. Look for alcohol-free formulas. For oily skin, choose a toner with alpha-hydroxy acids such as salicylic acid. Drier skins will benefit from a hydrating, vitamin-packed toner.
Use a mask once a week, when your skin needs a deeper cleanse or an extra hit of moisture. Clay masks are great for drawing out grime, cream masks help to plump up skin, and sheet masks, which come as pre-soaked cloths, are good for an anti-aging serum hit.
7. SERUM OR FACIAL OIL
This is your treatment product. Use it between toning and moisturizing to see the change in your skin. You can get serums and oils to help treat anything from sensitivity to fine lines, dryness or acne. The smaller particles in these formulations allow their active ingredients to penetrate the skin to a deeper level than creams.
8. EYE CREAM
The skin around your eyes is thinner than elsewhere on the face, so normal moisturizer may be too heavy for this area. Eye creams hydrate and can also treat problems – look out for ingredients such as vitamin C to treat dark circles, caffeine to counteract puffiness, and collagen-boosting peptides to reduce fine lines. Always apply eye cream before moisturizer so that the eye area absorbs it.
Invest in a light day cream with an SPF and non-greasy finish to apply under makeup. Use a heavier night cream, as your skin repairs itself at night and can take something richer. Try a fluid for summer or hot climates and a thicker cream for winter months.
Apply generously and evenly as the last step in your skincare routine, before makeup and 15 minutes before sun exposure. Reapply at least every two hours when exposed to sunlight or after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating. Take a dime-size amount and spread evenly onto face, gently patting for absorption. Reapply every two hours.
